What to Expect
What to expect at your lung testing appointment
- Stop taking your breathing medications for a short period.
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing that doesn't squeeze your chest.
- Refrain from eating a large meal at least two hours before the test.
- Avoid any heavy exercise at least 30 minutes before the test.
During the test, you will be sitting upright. A clip is placed on your nose and you will be given a plastic mouthpiece connected to the spirometry machine. You will place your lips tightly around the mouthpiece and be asked to take in as big and deep a breath as possible and then blow out as hard and fast as you can. Your results will be shared within a few minutes.

How do I prep for a FibroScan®
- Avoid eating or drinking anything (water is fine) for at least three hours before the scan.
- Continue taking any prescribed medicine.
- Avoid wearing any one-piece clothing items (jumpsuit, dress, etc.) on the day of your appointment.
- You cannot have a FibroScan® if you’re pregnant.
- You will lay down on the exam table and place your right arm above your head.
- The right side of your abdomen will be exposed. You do not have to remove jewelry near the site of the scan.
- The technician will feel your abdomen to find the right place to perform the scan.
- When the scan begins, sound waves pass through your skin, to the liver and back. It is not painful, although you may feel gentle pressure.
- The scan takes 10-15 minutes to perform.
